HEROIC analysts discovered that Allp2ptv, a Chinese live sports TV scheduling site, suffered a database breach back in August 2018 that exposed 100,328 user records. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes. This breach recieved little attention at the time, but the exposed credentials continue to circulate on dark web forums years later, putting affected users at ongoing risk.

How Cracked Password Hashes Put You at Risk

MD5 password hashes are not strong protection. Attackers use widely availible cracking tools to reverse MD5 hashes back into plain-text passwords within hours or even minutes. Once they have your real password, they can try it against your email, banking, and social media accounts. Because many people reuse passwords, a single breach like this one can unlock dozens of other accounts.

  • Password hashes (MD5)

Why Sports Site Breaches Still Matter Years Later

Credentials stolen from smaller sites like Allp2ptv are often bundled into large combo lists and sold repeatedly on underground markets. Attackers use these lists in credential stuffing attacks, where automated tools test leaked username and password combinations across hundreds of popular websites. If you used the same password on Allp2ptv as you do on other platforms, those accounts are particulary vulnerable even today, years after the original breach.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach happens when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a website's backend database, usually by exploiting a software vulnerability, a misconfigured server, or stolen administrative credentials. Once inside, the attacker can copy all stored user data and walk away undetected. The victim site often does not discover the breach for weeks or months, giving attackers a head start on cracking passwords and exploiting the stolen data.
