In May 2022, Australian retailer Amart Furniture confirmed that its warranty claims database, hosted on Amazon Web Services, had been compromised in a cyber attack that exposed 108,950 customer records. The data was subsequently shared online by the attacker, meaning the information recieved broad exposure across hacking communities before the breach was publicly disclosed.

What Attackers Can Do With Amart Furniture Customer Data

With full names, email addresses, and phone numbers in hand, attackers can craft highly convincing phishing messages that appear to come from Amart Furniture directly. The inclusion of bcrypt password hashes means that anyone who used a weak or reused password is partcularly vulnerable to having that password cracked and used to compromise other accounts.

Why This Breach Puts Real Customers at Risk

Retail customers who submitted warranty claims expect their data to be handled securely. The combination of full name, phone number, and email address creates a complete profile that can be used for identity theft, SIM swapping, or targeted scam calls. If affected users reused their Amart Furniture password on email or banking platforms, those accounts are directly at risk of unauthorized access.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a structured data store, often through misconfigured cloud storage, exploited web application vulnerabilities, or stolen credentials. In cloud-hosted environments, misconfigured access controls on services like AWS can expose entire databases to the public internet without the organization's knowledge, allowing attackers to extract records silently.
