The afisha.orsk.ru Data Quietly Appeared on the Dark Web Last Week
HEROIC analysts noted that the afisha.orsk.ru breach data quietly appeared in a dark web repository of Russian-language credential dumps earlier this year. The breach occured in August 2018 and affected 15,896 users of a now-defunct Russian events listing site for the city of Orsk. The recieved dataset contains email addresses and MD5 password hashes, small in scale but consistent with the credential reuse risk that makes older breaches persistently dangerous.
What Attackers Can Do With MD5-Hashed Credentials From afisha.orsk.ru
MD5 hashes provide almost no real protection in 2024. Attackers can run the afisha.orsk.ru hash list through precomputed rainbow tables or GPU cracking rigs and recover plaintext passwords for a large share of the 15,896 accounts in a matter of hours. Those recovered passwords are then tested across accessable targets: email inboxes, social media, online banking, and corporate login portals.
