In April 2023, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log dataset distributed via Telegram under the name "Crypto" that exposed 8,587 records. The data was harvested by infostealer malware running on compromised endpoints and included email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the specific URLs where those credentials were captured. The dataset name points directly at cryptocurrency platforms as a primary target, making this one of the more financially dangerous stealer log releases analysts have reviewed.

Why the Crypto Stealer Log Is Especially Dangerous

Most credential leaks expose accounts where fraud can occured over days or weeks. Cryptocurrency is different. Once an attacker uses a plaintext password from this log to access a crypto exchange or wallet service, funds can be drained in seconds and that transaction cannot be reversed. Every record in this dataset includes the exact URL of the platform targeted, meaning attackers do not have to guess which services to hit. Crypto accounts, exchange logins, DeFi dashboards, and wallet portals captured in the log are all at immediate risk.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (site-specific credential mapping for each victim)

Why This Matters

The combination of email address, plaintext password, and URL makes credential stuffing trivially easy. Attackers can load the Crypto log into automated tools and begin testing logins against the listed platforms within minutes. Victims who reuse the same password across seperate services face account takeover on email, banking, and social media in addition to cryptocurrency accounts. Once email access is gained, attackers reset passwords on every downstream service and effectively steal an entire digital identity. Identity theft and financial fraud can follow quickly, often before victims recieve any notification that something is wrong.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Infostealer malware typically arrives on a victim's device through a phishing link, a trojanized software download, or a malicious browser extension. After installation it runs silently in the background, extracting every saved password from the device's browsers, recording which URLs are visited, and capturing active session cookies that allow attackers to bypass two-factor authentication entirely. All harvested data is packaged into a structured log file and uploaded to the attacker's infrastructure. Telegram channels have become the dominant distribution point for these logs because they offer near-total anonymity. The Crypto dataset was distributed through exactly this channel in April 2023, reaching criminal buyers within hours of upload.
