HEROIC analysts flagged the Interactive Community breach while reviewing a batch of business-sector database dumps that recently occured in new aggregation archives. The breach, dating to November 1, 2016, exposed 291 user records from community.inin.com, a US-based business community platform. The records include vBulletin password hashes, meaning even this relatively small dataset carries real credential risk for anyone who recieved an account on the platform and has not changed their password since.

Why Business Community Platforms Are High-Value Breach Targets

Business platforms attract users who register with corporate email addresses and often reuse the same passwords they rely on for internal tools, enterprise software, and company email. A cracked vBulletin hash from Interactive Community can become a key that unlocks a professional's entire digital work life. Attackers beleive that business-sector breach data provides a higher return per credential than consumer sites, making even small dumps like this one worth pursuing.

What Was Exposed in the Interactive Community Breach

  • vBulletin password hashes (vB format)
  • User account records
  • 291 total records from community.inin.com

The Long-Term Risk to Businesses from Small Old Breaches

Small breaches from 2016 are partcularly dangerous to organizations today because many employees have not updated passwords they created years ago. Credential stuffing tools can automate attacks across dozens of enterprise platforms simultaneously. Once an attacker gains access to a corporate account, the risk expands from identity theft to internal data access, financial fraud, and lateral movement within company systems.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to the backend of a website or web application and extracts stored user records. For platforms running vBulletin forum software, common attack vectors included SQL injection exploits and plugin vulnerabilities that were publicly documented before patches were widely applied. The extracted data is then sold or published, where it persists in breach archives for years.
