HEROIC analysts identified the SciTechnol breach in August 2018 when a database from this UK-based science journal platform appeared in underground data markets. The breach exposed 237,515 records containing email addresses and hashed passwords. SciTechnol operates as an open-access academic publishing platform used by researchers, scientists, and academics who submit and review scientific papers. The exposure of their login credentials is partcularly significant because academics often use the same email address and password across university systems, research databases, and institutional networks, making this breach a potential gateway into sensitive research environments.


How Hashed Passwords From Academic Platforms Get Cracked and Exploited

Even though SciTechnol's passwords were stored as hashes rather than plain text, hashed passwords are not safe once they leave the database.
