HEROIC analysts flagged the STAKE_LOGS dataset during routine Telegram monitoring in late May 2024. The file, uploaded by an anonymous user to a public channel, contained 5,907 records harvested from compromised endpoints. Each record paired an email address and plaintext password with the specific URL where that credential was in active use. The data was structured and ready to deploy, requiring no additional processing before it could be used in an attack.

What the STAKE_LOGS Upload Revealed About Targeted Credential Theft

The relatively contained size of this dataset is notable. Broad credential dumps often pull in millions of records indiscriminately. A set of under 6,000 records with precise URL mappings suggests the malware was deployed with a specific target profile in mind, or that the infected endpoints belonged to a defined group of users. Either way, the specificity of the data increases its value to attackers and the immediacy of the risk to those affected.

Stake is a well-known online gambling platform, and the presence of logs tied to that ecosystem is significant. Gambling accounts often hold withdrawable balances, payment method details, and verified identity documents. A compromised account is not just a login issue. It is a direct path to financial loss and, in some cases, identity misuse.

What Was Exposed in the STAKE_LOGS Dataset

  • Email Addresses: Primary login identifiers for targeted accounts
  • Plaintext Passwords: Unencrypted credentials captured directly from infected devices
  • URLs: The exact services and platforms where each credential was used

Why This Matters: Plaintext Passwords and the Speed of Account Takeover

When passwords are stolen as plaintext, there is no delay between acquisition and exploitation. There is no cracking phase, no dictionary attack, no waiting. The attacker has working credentials the moment the log is opened. For victims, this means the window between infection and account takeover can be measured in hours rather than days.

Credential stuffing tools can process thousands of login attempts per hour across multiple platforms. If any of the email and password pairs from STAKE_LOGS match accounts on other services, those accounts are also at risk. Password reuse is extreamly common, and attackers rely on it to multiply the damage from any single log file.

How Stealer Log Malware Harvests Credentials

Stealer malware typically arrives through phishing links, cracked software downloads, or malicious browser extensions. Once installed, it runs silently in the background and sweeps the device for saved credentials. It reads from browser password managers, application keystores, and active session cookies, then packages everything into a structured log file.

That file is then sent back to the attacker's server or posted directly to a Telegram channel, where it gets downloaded, resold, or bundled into larger combolists. The STAKE_LOGS upload followed this exact workflow, moving from infected endpoints to a public Telegram channel where HEROIC's monitoring systems detected it almost immediatly after it appeard.

Check If Your Data Was Included in the STAKE_LOGS Breach

HEROIC's breach scanner checks against more than 400 billion exposed records, including stealer logs like this one that are rarely indexed by public breach databases. If your email address was part of this upload or any related dataset, HEROIC will surface it immediately.
