Steam Gamers Community (steamgamers.com) was a forum dedicated to the Steam gaming platform, providing a community space for players to discuss games, share content, and organize play sessions. In December 2012, the forum's database was breached, exposing 5,060 user accounts. The stolen data includes email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, vBulletin password hashes, and the hash type field identifying the exact algorithm used for each account. Despite the relatively small account count, the breach is verified and the data has been observed in underground collections where smaller forum databases are bundled together for sale.

Why Steam Gamers Community Breach Is Dangerous

vBulletin was the most widely used forum software during the early 2010s, and its password hashing was notoriously weak. The hash type field exposed in this breach tells attackers exactly which variant of vBulletin hashing was used for each account, eliminating the guesswork from cracking attempts. Even a forum with only 5,060 members represents 5,060 people whose email-password combinations can be tested against banking, email, and social media platforms. The serous problem with small community breaches is that members often feel overlooked and never think to update the passwords they used on niche forums.

Why This Steam Gamers Community Data Puts You at Risk

If you registered on Steam Gamers Community in 2012 with an email address you still use today, that email is now linked to your old gaming identity in a verified breach database. Credential stuffing tools automaticaly test breached email-password pairs against hundreds of websites simultaneously. The password you used on this small gaming forum in 2012, once cracked from the vBulletin hash, may still work on other accounts you have never updated. IP address data from that era can also be used to establish a historical location record for identity fraud purposes.

Why Small Forum Breaches Get Bundled and Sold

Large breaches attract media attention, but small forum databases like Steam Gamers Community are valuable in a different way. Aggregators purchase dozens of small forum dumps and merge them into a single collection, dramatically increasing the number of unique email addresses available for testing. A person who never appeared in a major breach may have occured in three or four small forum breaches, making their credentials traceable through bundled datasets. This is why monitoring your email across all breach sources matters, not just the high-profile incidents.
