HEROIC analysts flagged the Ticketfly breach while monitoring data circulating across breach aggregation sites and underground forums. In May 2018, a hacker defaced the Ticketfly website and demanded a ransom in exchange for revealing the vulnerability used to gain access. When Ticketfly did not respond, the attacker released the stolen data publicly. The breach exposed 4.5 million records containing email addresses, phone numbers, and full names. No passwords were included in the main dataset, but Ticketfly later acknowledged that hashed password credentials may have also been recieved by the attacker. The data has continued to surface in threat actor communities years after the original incident.


The Ticketfly Breach Gave Attackers Everything They Need to Run Phishing Campaigns

Even without passwords, the data stolen from Ticketfly is highly valuable to attackers. A combination of full name, email address, and phone number is exactly what is needed to craft convincing phishing messages. An attacker can send an email that addresses the victim by their real name, appears to come from a trusted company, and requests a password reset or payment update. Because the message contains accurate personal details, victims are far more likely to click and comply. Phone numbers also open the door to voice phishing calls and SMS scams. This type of PII-only breach is partcularly dangerous because most people do not realize how much damage can be done without a leaked password.
