HEROIC analysts identified a database breach tied to 17Media, the live streaming platform at 17app.co, dating back to March 1, 2016. The breach exposed 648,240 records, including email addresses, usernames, and passwords. The passwords were stored using a mix of MD5 hashing and, in some cases, plaintext, meaning some passwords were never protected at all.


Why the 17Media Breach Is Dangerous

Storing any password in plaintext is one of the most serious mistakes a company can make, since it hands attackers a working login the moment the database is stolen, with no cracking required. The MD5-hashed passwords in this breach aren't much better protected. MD5 runs fast, so attackers can test billions of password guesses per second against a stolen hash using consumer-grade hardware.
