The 800K Private Userpass Leak Gave Hackers 689,648 Working Logins
In January 2023, HEROIC analysts identified a combolist file called 800K Private Userpass uploaded to a Telegram channel by an anonymous user. The file contained 689,648 records made up of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of the accounts those logins belong to.
What This Leak Actually Hands to Attackers
With 689,648 working email and password pairs in one file, an attacker does not need to hack anything. They already have the front door key. Each record tells them exactly which site to try the login on, and because the passwords are stored in plaintext, there is no encryption slowing them down. That is enough to start logging into accounts at scale within minutes of downloading the file.
What Was Exposed in the 800K Private Userpass Leak
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs of the accounts and services those credentials belong to
Why This Matters Beyond the Original Accounts
Very few people use a different password for every account. If your email and password show up in this file, an attacker can run the same login against your email provider, your bank, and your shopping accounts through credential stuffing. That is the direct path from a leaked combolist to account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud, and with 689,648 records, the reach of this file is significant.
How a Combolist This Size Gets Built
Large combolists like this one are usually stitched together from multiple sources: older data breaches, stealer logs, and successful phishing campaigns, all combined into a single list of email and password pairs. Compilers merge these sources to create a bigger, more valuable file, which is exactly how 689,648 separate credentials ended up bundled into one Telegram upload.
