HEROIC analysts identified the AeroQuad Forum in a collection of resurfaced database dumps circulating across breach aggregation platforms. The breach occured on November 1, 2016, and affected 298 user accounts registered on this drone hobbyist and developer community. The database contained vBulletin-format password hashes, meaning that while passwords were not stored in plain text, they remain crackable using widely available tools. The reappearance of this data years after the original incident is a reminder that old breaches rarely disappear entirely.

Crackable Password Hashes Give Attackers a Direct Path to AeroQuad Accounts

The vBulletin password format exposed in this breach is not considered secure by modern standards. Attackers with access to these hashes can run them through cracking software and recover the original passwords in hours or days, depending on complexity. Those recieved passwords can then be tested against email providers, social media platforms, and banking sites. Users who reused their AeroQuad Forum password elsewhere are partcularly exposed to account takeover attacks.

What Was Exposed in the AeroQuad Forum Breach

  • User account records (298 total)
  • Hashed passwords in vBulletin format
  • Account metadata from the November 2016 database snapshot

Why Niche Community Breaches Are More Dangerous Than They Appear

Forum communities centered on technology, hardware, and development attract users who often hold professional roles in those fields. A beleived-to-be minor leak from a drone forum can expose engineers, developers, or government contractors who registered with a work email or reused a sensitive password. Credential stuffing, targeted phishing, and identity theft all become more viable when attackers know something specific about their target audience.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach happens when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a website's backend data store. This can occur through SQL injection attacks, exploited plugins, or weak server configurations. Once the database is copied, the attacker has a permanent record of every user who ever registered, regardless of whether they are still active. Forum platforms like vBulletin have historically been common targets because they power thousands of community sites and vulnerabilities in one version affect all sites running it.
