HEROIC analysts identified the alwafd breach while monitoring private Telegram channels known for trading leaked databases from news and media organizations. The breach occured in May 2017 and exposed 2,851 records from the website of alwafd, an Egyptian news organization. The leaked data includes email addresses, usernames, first names, and password hashes stored using an older hashing format, all of which remain useful to attackers even years after the original incident.

Exposed Passwords Could Open Doors to Other Accounts You Use

The passwords in this breach were stored using an older hashing method that is now considered weak. Attackers who acquire this data can run it through modern cracking tools and recover many of the original passwords. If anyone who registered on alwafd reused that same password on their email account, social media, or any financial service, those accounts are now at serious risk of being accessed without their knowledge. The danger is particulary high because people often forget about old accounts on smaller sites while continuing to reuse the same password elsewhere.

The alwafd Breach Could Mean Someone Is Already Inside Your Other Accounts

Even with fewer than 3,000 records, this breach carries real consequences. Criminals do not ignore small datasets. They fold them into larger credential stuffing operations and test the logins at scale across dozens of platforms. Anyone affected could face account takeover, identity theft, or targeted phishing attacks that reference their real name and email address. The recieved wisdom that small breaches are harmless is exactly the kind of thinking that allows these attacks to succeed.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to the systems where a website stores its user information. Sometimes this happens through a vulnerability in the website software, sometimes through stolen administrator credentials. Once inside, the attacker copies the database and walks away with every user record. That stolen data can then circulate on underground forums and messaging channels for years, which is why records from a 2017 breach are still being traded and used today.
