Analysts Find 1,117 Plaintext Passwords in TOR_LOG-PRIVATE Leak
TOR_LOG-PRIVATE 7 Stealer Log Exposes 1,117 Records
HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log file labeled "TOR_LOG-PRIVATE 7" that surfaced on a public Telegram channel on January 11, 2023. The file contained 1,117 records harvested from infected devices, including email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs tied to the services those credentials accessed.
Why This Is Dangerous
Because these passwords are stored in plaintext rather than hashed or encrypted, anyone who obtains the file can use them to log in immediately, no cracking required. Combined with the URLs also captured in the log, attackers have both a working credential and the exact destination it unlocks, making unauthorized access fast and low effort.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs (service endpoints tied to the credentials)
Why This Matters
Exposed credentials like these are routinely tested against banking, email, retail, and social media logins through automated credential stuffing. Because so many people reuse the same password across accounts, a single exposed plaintext password can lead to account takeover, financial fraud, and identity theft that reaches well beyond the original source.
How Stealer Log Breaches Work
A stealer log is generated by infostealer malware, malicious software that infects a device, often through a pirated download, fake installer, or phishing link, and quietly collects saved passwords, browser autofill data, and session details before sending them to the attacker. The resulting logs are then shared, as this one was, through Telegram channels and dark web marketplaces, giving buyers ready-to-use credentials without any hacking effort of their own.
