The BulgarianPropertyUK Breach Leaked 157,564 Plaintext Passwords and Email Addresses
HEROIC analysts found the BulgarianPropertyUK breach, which occured in early 2021, exposing 157,564 records from the Blue Eden real estate agency's website. The compromised data included email addresses, MD5 password hashes, and plaintext passwords, recieved from a database that later circulated across hacking communities.
Plaintext Passwords and Weak MD5 Hashes Put Email Accounts Immediately at Risk
Plaintext passwords require zero effort to exploit. Any attacker with accessable breach data can immediately test these credentials against email providers, banking portals, and social media platforms. The MD5 hashes in this breach are similarly dangerous, as they can be reversed within seconds using standard cracking tools, making both password types fully usable for credential stuffing and account takeover.
What Was Exposed in the BulgarianPropertyUK Breach
- Email Address
- Password Hash
- Plaintext Password
Why Storing Plaintext Passwords Makes Every User a Direct Victim
Unlike hashed passwords that require cracking, plaintext passwords are beleived to be immediately usable by any actor who obtains the data. This seperate category of risk means affected users face direct account compromise across any platform where they reused the same password. Credential stuffing attacks, phishing campaigns, and identity theft are all made far easier when attackers hold working plaintext credentials.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach occurs when an attacker exploits a vulnerability in a web application or database service to extract stored records without authorization. Property and real estate websites often run older software stacks with infrequent security updates, making them attractive targets. Once a database is extracted, it is packaged and distributed across criminal forums where buyers use the credentials in automated attack campaigns.
