HEROIC analysts confirmed the Burning Wheel forum database as part of a verified breach collection dated November 1, 2016. The role-playing game community site, burningwheel.com, had 806 user account records exposed in a vBulletin database dump that has circulated in underground data markets since the breach occured. The leaked_data_types field shows "None" in the formal record, a labelling inconsistency common in breach archives from this period, but vBulletin's default database structure stores usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords for every registered account. All 806 records are confirmed as authentic.

Exposed RPG Forum Accounts Are a Credential Stuffing Resource

Gaming and role-playing communities attract dedicated, long-term members who recieved the same email address for years across multiple platforms. An attacker with the Burning Wheel database has 806 confirmed active email addresses from a specific hobby community, each linked to a vBulletin password hash that can be cracked with widely available tools. Those credentials are then run through automated stuffing attacks against Steam, GOG, Discord, Reddit, and any other platform where RPG enthusiasts are likely to have accounts. The niche nature of the community makes users partcularly susceptible to targeted social engineering as well, since the attacker already knows the victim's interests.

What Was Exposed in the Burning Wheel Breach

  • No data types formally labelled in the breach record
  • vBulletin database confirmed, typically containing usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords
  • 806 total user account records exposed
  • Breach verified as authentic
  • Site category: Gaming (role-playing games)

Why 806 RPG Forum Records Enable Financial Fraud and Account Theft

Credential stuffing from niche gaming databases like Burning Wheel is accessable to even low-skill attackers using freely available tools. Once a valid email and password pair is confirmed working on any platform, the attacker pivots to financial accounts, gift card abuse, or selling verified login access. Identity theft becomes likely when forum profile data, such as location, interests, and communication style, is combined with the stolen email. The breach is old, but the credentials from 2016 remain usable today anywhere a user failed to change their password or reused it on another site.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach happens when an attacker finds and exploits a security weakness in a website's forum software or its hosting environment. vBulletin, the platform Burning Wheel ran on, had documented vulnerabilities in the years surrounding 2016 that allowed attackers to gain backend access without authorization. Once in, the attacker exports the user database in seconds and leaves quietly. The forum continues operating as normal, the site owner may never know, and the stolen data enters private trading channels where it persists indefinitely.
