If You Reuse Passwords, the CafePress Leak Should Worry You
A Decrypted CafePress Password Set Surfaced on Telegram
On 20 August 2023, HEROIC analysts identified a combolist labeled "Cafepress_decrupt_left_01.06.21," uploaded to Telegram by an individual user. The file name points to CafePress and indicates a decrypted, partial set of records dated internally to early 2021. In total, the list contained 126,020 records, each pairing an email address with a plaintext password and the URL of the associated login page.
Why This Is Dangerous
Because these passwords are stored in plaintext, there is nothing left for an attacker to crack. The password sits right next to the email address it belongs to and the exact site it unlocks. For anyone who has ever had a CafePress account, and especially anyone who reused that password on another site, this file hands an attacker a working set of login credentials with zero extra effort.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs of the associated login pages
Why This Matters
Password reuse is what turns a single old leak into a much bigger problem. Attackers feed lists like this one into credential stuffing tools that automatically try each email and password pair against email providers, banks, and shopping accounts. If even a fraction of the 126,020 people in this file reused their CafePress password elsewhere, those accounts are now at risk of takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud.
How a Decrypted Combolist Like This Gets Made
Files labeled "decrypt" typically start life as a password dump that was originally protected by hashing or encryption. Someone works to reverse that protection, whether through cracking tools, leaked keys, or prior unauthorized access, and converts the passwords back into readable plaintext. The result is repackaged into a clean combolist and passed around Telegram channels where stolen data is traded, sold, or given away for anyone to use.
Check If You Are Affected
If you have ever created a CafePress account or reused a password across multiple sites, it is worth checking your exposure now. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email address against a database of more than 400 billion leaked records, including combolists like this one, so you can find out immediately and change any passwords that are still at risk.
