Cheat-Master Exposed More Accounts Than Latvia Has People
HEROIC analysts detected the Cheat-Master breach while monitoring underground forums and Russian-language Telegram channels known for trading gaming credentials. The breach occured in August 2018 and exposed 2,018,898 records from this Russian gaming forum focused on cheats and game modifications. The leaked data contained email addresses and plaintext passwords, meaning every password was stored in fully readable text with no encryption, giving anyone who obtained the database immediate access to more than two million real login credentials.
Why Two Million Plaintext Gaming Passwords Are a Serious Threat
Gaming accounts are more valuable to attackers than many people beleive. They often hold linked payment methods, in-game currency, rare items, and sometimes the same email and password combination used on banking or shopping sites. With plaintext passwords, attackers do not need to crack anything. They can take those credentials and run automated login attempts across Steam, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and dozens of other platforms within hours, a process called credential stuffing that succeeds at alarming rates against users who reuse passwords.

Why This Gaming Forum Breach Has Long-Term Consequences
Over two million credentials from a single forum represent a significant volume of data to enter the criminal marketplace. Since 2018, these records have been bundled into large combo lists and sold repeatedly on dark web and Telegram markets. Users who registered on Cheat-Master and never changed their password elsewhere remain at active risk of account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud. Credential stuffing tools test thousands of combinations per minute, meaning the window of risk does not close on its own.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when an attacker finds an exploitable weakness in a website's code or server configuration and exports the underlying user database. Gaming and hobby forums are common targets because they often run on older software, have limited security budgets, and store large numbers of user accounts. Once the database is stolen, it moves quickly through underground channels, first sold exclusively, then traded more widely, and eventually included in massive public credential dumps used by automated attack tools.
