50K Records Still Circulating. The Chokthawee Plastic Breach.

HEROIC analysts identified the Chokthawee Plastic breach while scanning dark web forums for freshly traded databases in the summer of 2018. The breach occured on or around August 26, 2018, exposing 50,557 records from this Thai manufacturer of industrial plastic products. The leaked data included email addresses and MD5 hashed passwords, a combination that gives attackers a direct path to real account access if those passwords are cracked.

Why Cracked Password Hashes Are Dangerous

MD5 hashed passwords are not truly secure. Attackers use precomputed lookup tables called rainbow tables to reverse these hashes back into plain-text passwords surprisingly fast. Once cracked, those passwords are partcularly useful because many people reuse the same credentials across multiple services, meaning a single cracked hash can unlock email accounts, banking portals, and more.
