DarkHive discovered a data breach affecting CIEL, an India-based financial education platform. The breach exposed 37,146 records including email addresses and plaintext passwords, with data leaked in August 2018. This breach is particularly concerning because login credentials were stored without any encryption, leaving users completley vulnerable to account takeover and identity theft.

Why This Is Dangerous

Plaintext passwords are the worst case scenario in a data breach. Unlike hashed passwords which require cracking, plaintext credentials can be used imediately by attackers. Anyone who reuses thier CIEL password on other websites, banking apps, or email accounts is at serious risk of having those accounts compromised. Financial education platforms often attract users who are also active in banking and investing, making this breach especially high-value for cybercriminals.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Plaintext Password

Why This Matters

When email and plaintext password pairs are leaked together, attackers can immediately begin credential stuffing attacks. Automated bots will try these exact credentials on hundreds of popular websites including banks, email providers, and shopping platforms. Users who reuse passwords across multiple services face the highest risk of having seperate accounts compromised through this single breach. The combination of email plus plaintext password is considered the most dangerous type of credential exposure possible.

How Database Breach Works

A database breach occured when attackers gained unauthorized access to CIEL's backend systems and directly extracted user records from the database. In this case, the platform failed to implement basic security practices by storing passwords in plaintext rather than using cryptographic hashing. This means attackers did not need to crack or decode anything, the passwords were readable as-is. Combolist distribution then allows these credentials to be sold and traded on dark web marketplaces, amplifying the reach of the original breach far beyond the initial theft.

Check If You Are Affected

HEROIC offers a free identity scanner that checks if your email address appears in known data breaches including this CIEL breach. Visit heroic.com to scan your email and find out if your credentials have been exposed. If you had an account with CIEL, you should immediately change your password there and on any other site where you used the same password. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible to protect your accounts even if credentials are leaked in future breaches.
