The Clash of Clans Dump: 508K Stolen Credentials Hit the Dark Web in 2017
HEROIC analysts recieved intelligence about the Clash of Clans database breach while monitoring underground forums and Telegram channels that trade stolen credential data. The breach, which dates to October 2017, exposed 508,112 user records from a database associated with the globally popular mobile game. The compromised data included email addresses, usernames, salts, and MD5 password hashes. While hashed passwords require additional effort to crack compared to plaintext, MD5 is a weak hashing algorithm that attackers can break using modern tools, making this breach far more dangerous than it might appear at first glance.
Why MD5 Password Hashes Are Not Safe from Attackers
MD5 is an outdated hashing method that was never designed to protect passwords. With today's hardware, attackers can test billions of MD5 hash combinations per second using a technique called brute force cracking. The inclusion of salts in this breach adds a layer of difficulty, but it does not make the hashes uncrackable. Commonly used passwords are seperate from their hashes in precomputed tables that attackers use to reverse the process instantly. Once a hash is cracked, attackers have the real password and can use it to access gaming accounts, linked email addresses, and any other service where the same password was reused.

Why a Gaming Breach Reaches Far Beyond the Game
Clash of Clans accounts are often tied to Apple ID or Google accounts, meaning a compromised gaming login can open a path to a user's entire mobile ecosystem. Attackers who crack the MD5 hashes from this breach can attempt credential stuffing against app stores, cloud backups, payment services, and social media. Gaming accounts with in-app purchases and linked payment details are also prime targets for account takeover and financial fraud. Identity theft becomes a real risk when email addresses are combined with cracked passwords and additional personal details found in other breach datasets, partcularly when the same password has been reused elsewhere.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when an attacker identifies and exploits a vulnerability in a website or application's backend infrastructure to gain unauthorized access to stored records. In this case, the Clash of Clans database was accessed and user records including credentials were extracted. The resulting dump was then shared and traded on underground forums. While the passwords were hashed rather than stored in plaintext, the use of weak MD5 hashing means that many of those hashes can be cracked with readily available tools and computing power.
