What HEROIC Analysts Found in the datamay Stealer Log

In June 2023, a Telegram user uploaded a stealer log archive containing 5,049 records from datamay endpoints. HEROIC analysts confirmed the dataset contains plaintext passwords, email addresses, and URLs -- all harvested from victims' devices by infostealer malware. This data has been available in underground channels since mid-2023, giving attackers years of opportunity to exploit the exposed credentials.

Why This Is Dangerous for Victims

Stealer logs containing plaintext passwords are the most immediately exploitable form of leaked credential data. There is no hashing, encryption, or cracking required. An attacker who finds a victim's email address and password in this dataset can log into their account in seconds. Combined with the URL data that maps exactly which services the victim used, this gives attackers a precise roadmap for targeted account takeover.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (specific services the victim was logged into)

Why This Matters: Account Takeover, Identity Theft, and Financial Fraud

Once plaintext credentials from a stealer log reach criminal markets, they are tested against banking sites, e-commerce platforms, corporate tools, and email providers using automated credential stuffing tools. Because most people reuse passwords, a single credential pair can unlock multiple accounts. Victims face unauthorized purchases, drained bank accounts, intercepted email, and long-term identity theft risks -- often without knowing any of it is happening until serious damage has been done.

How Stealer Logs Work

Infostealer malware is delivered primarily through phishing emails, pirated software, and fake browser extensions. Once it runs on a device, it silently collects every credential stored in the browser, harvests active session cookies, and captures clipboard content. The complete data package is compressed and uploaded to a Telegram channel or remote server operated by the attacker. The malware executes quickly and quietly, with most victims completely unaware of the compromise until they experience account-level consequences.
