eChanblard Next Hack: 3.16 Million French Forum Credentials Leaked
HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the eChanblard Next data breach, exposing 3,162,680 records in August 2018. eChanblard Next is a French forum community centered around file sharing software. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes, putting millions of French internet users at serious risk of credential theft and account compromise.
Why This Is Dangerous
With over 3 million records exposed, the eChanblard Next breach represents a massive pool of credentials available to cybercriminals. MD5-hashed passwords are vulnerable to rapid cracking using rainbow tables and GPU-based tools, so attackers can quickly recover plaintext passwords for use in account takeover attacks. File sharing community users often have accounts on related technology platforms and services, making credential reuse a significant additional risk.
What Was Exposed
- Email Address
- Password Hash (MD5)
Why This Matters
A breach of this scale provides attackers with an enormous credential stuffing arsenal. Automated tools test these email and password combinations against banking portals, social media, streaming services, and cloud storage platforms around the clock. French users with email addresses in this dataset are also prime targets for phishing campaigns conducted in French, which are harder to detect and therefore more effective. The breach data has been circulating since 2018, continuously fueling new waves of account compromise attempts.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach occurs when attackers exploit security vulnerabilities in a website's infrastructure, such as SQL injection flaws, unpatched software, or poorly secured administrative access, to download the site's user database. Forum platforms built on older open-source software are particularly vulnerable because outdated plugins and themes often contain known security flaws. Once extracted, the database is shared across dark web forums and Telegram channels, where it gets combined with other breach datasets to create massive combolist collections used in large-scale automated attacks.
