In May 2022, Euronics, a major Italian consumer electronics retailer, suffered a database breach that exposed 375,301 customer records. The incident occured without public disclosure at the time, leaving hundreds of thousands of shoppers unaware that their login credentials had been circulating on underground forums.

What Attackers Can Do With This Data

Plaintext passwords are the worst-case outcome in any breach. Unlike hashed credentials, they require zero cracking effort. Attackers can immediatley load the Euronics email and password pairs into credential stuffing tools and test them against banking apps, email providers, and other retail accounts at scale.

Why This Breach Matters

Plaintext password storage is a fundamental security failure. Any organization handling user accounts is expected to hash and salt passwords before storing them. Euronics did not do this for at least 375,301 accounts. For affected users who reuse that same password on other platforms, every one of those accounts is now at risk without any additional effort from the attacker.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker extracts data from a backend data store through SQL injection, stolen credentials, or a misconfigured server. In this case, the Euronics customer database was dumped and posted to breach forums, making it freely accessible to anyone who found it. The presence of plaintext passwords means the data was immediately usable the moment it was posted.
