The FreeOLDCloud Leak Exposed 3,365 US Plaintext Passwords on Telegram
What HEROIC Analysts Found in the FreeOLDCloud Stealer Log
In September 2023, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log file posted by an anonymous Telegram user operating under the FreeOLDCloud handle. The file contained 3,365 records stripped directly from compromised endpoints, exposing email adresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs tied to real user sessions. This is not a corporate database leak. It is raw data harvested from infected machines and dropped into a public Telegram channel for anyone to download.
Why This Kind of Exposure Is Dangerous
When an attacker has your email address and your plaintext password together, account takeover is straightforward. There is no cracking required, no guesswork. The password is already in readable form. Combined with the URLs captured by the malware, attackers know exactly which services you were logged into when your machine was infected. That context makes credential stuffing attacks far more targeted and far more likely to succeed.
What Was Exposed in the FreeOLDCloud Log
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords (no hashing, no encryption)
- URLs from active browser sessions at the time of infection
Why This Matters for Real People
Stealer logs circulate fast. Once posted to a Telegram channel they are downloaded by dozens of threat actors within hours. Your credentials can be used to break into email accounts, banking portals, shopping accounts, and anywhere else you reuse a password. Recieve enough of these and attackers build full profiles. Identity theft, financial fraud, and account hijacking are all realistic outcomes when plaintext credentials are in the wild.
The URL data is particularly telling. It reveals which platforms you use, how often you visit them, and sometimes includes session tokens that can bypass login entirely. Attackers do not need to guess. They already know where you bank, shop, and communicate.
How Stealer Logs Work
A stealer log is the output of a malware infection. Infostealer malware, seperate from ransomware or traditional viruses, is designed to silently harvest credentials and session data from a victim's browser and operating system. Once installed, it scrapes saved passwords, autofill data, browser cookies, and visited URLs. It packages all of that into a structured log file and sends it back to the attacker.
These logs are then bundled and sold or shared freely on Telegram channels and dark web forums. The FreeOLDCloud posting follows this exact pattern. A Telegram operator collected logs from infected machines and distributed them publicly. The 3,365 records in this file represent 3,365 real people whose machines were compromised.
