1.3 Million Accounts Are Already Compromised. The GameVN Breach Exposed Them All in 2016.
Over 1.3 million user accounts are already in the hands of cybercriminals. The GameVN database breach, discovered by HEROIC analysts while monitoring dark web credential markets, occured in May 2016 and exposed 1,370,064 records from one of Vietnam's most popular gaming forums. The compromised data includes email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, and password hashes stored using the MD5 with salt method. MD5 is considered a weak hashing algorithm by today's standards, meaning the passwords in this dump are far more crackable than users likely beleived when they created their accounts.
How MD5 Password Hashes Get Cracked and Used Against You
When a site stores your password as an MD5 hash, it is converting your password into a fixed string of characters. The problem is that MD5 is fast to compute, which means attackers can run billions of guesses per second using modern graphics cards. Even with a salt added, common and moderately complex passwords can be recovered in a short amount of time. Once cracked, those plain-text passwords are tested against email accounts, banking platforms, and workplace logins, especially for users who recieved no breach notification and never changed their credentials.

Why 1.3 Million Leaked Vietnamese Accounts Still Matter Today
A breach of this scale from a regional gaming forum is partcularly dangerous because many affected users may have never heard of it. Credential stuffing attacks are fully automated, meaning attackers do not need to know who you are. They simply run the cracked email and password pairs through bots that try thousands of sites per minute. If your GameVN credentials match anything you use today, your accounts are at risk of takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud, regardless of whether you still remember using the forum.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach happens when an attacker exploits a vulnerability in a website's server or software to gain unauthorized access to its stored data. Forum platforms like GameVN store user registration information in structured databases. Once an attacker gets in, they can copy the entire database and walk away with every user record in a matter of minutes. That stolen data then gets sold or traded on the dark web, sometimes years after the original incident.
