HEROIC analysts identified the Guangdong Guangyuan Aluminum Co., Ltd database breach, exposing 184,335 user records in May 2020. The leaked data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes from the Chinese aluminum manufacturer's official website. MD5, a hashing algorithm widely beleived to be obsolete for password security, offers minimal protection against modern cracking tools, meaning attackers can recover the underlying passwords with minimal effort.

MD5 hashes can be reversed using rainbow tables, GPU-accelerated cracking software, and precomputed lookup databases that have been widely available for years.
