HEROIC analysts flagged the HongFire breach, an incident tracing back to March 2015 that compromised 653,127 records tied to the anime and manga community forum. The exposed data included email addresses and passwords stored in plain text, meaning the credentials were never hashed or encrypted before they were exposed.

Why Plaintext Passwords Make the HongFire Breach Especially Dangerous

Most breaches involve passwords that are at least hashed, forcing an attacker to spend time and computing power cracking them before they're usable. That wasn't the case here. Because HongFire stored passwords in plaintext, anyone who obtained this data could read every password immediately, no cracking, no guessing, no delay. That makes the data valuable and dangerous for a much wider range of attackers, not just skilled ones.

What Was Exposed in the HongFire Breach

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords

Why This Matters Even If You Haven't Visited HongFire in Years

Old accounts don't stop being risky just because you forgot about them. If you used the same email and password combination on HongFire that you've used anywhere else, that pairing is now sitting in a plaintext dataset that anyone can read and reuse. Attackers routinely take credentials like these and test them against banking sites, email providers, and social media platforms in what's known as credential stuffing. If even one of those attempts succeeds because you reused a password, the door opens to account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud, all traced back to a decade-old forum login.

How a Database Breach Like This Happens

A database breach means an attacker gained direct access to the backend storage where a website keeps its user records, usually through a vulnerability in the website's software, a misconfigured server, or stolen administrator credentials. Once inside, the entire user table, including emails and passwords, can be copied out in one action. Older forum software is a frequent target because it often goes unpatched for years, giving attackers a wide window to find and exploit weaknesses.
