HEROIC analysts identified a dataset from LibraryLinkNJ, the online platform for the New Jersey Library Cooperative, circulating on a hacking forum. Discovered on August 26, 2018, the dataset contains 4,826 records, each pairing an email address with a password hash stored using either MD5 or Drupal 7 hashing.

Why This Is Dangerous

MD5 hashes can be cracked quickly with modern tools, and while Drupal 7's hashing is stronger, it is still vulnerable to attackers who pair it with common password lists. Once cracked, the plaintext password is only as dangerous as the accounts it can unlock elsewhere, which is exactly why a leak from a library website can still lead to real harm.

What Was Exposed in the LibraryLinkNJ Breach

  • Email addresses
  • Password hashes (MD5 or Drupal 7)

Why This Matters for the 4,826 People Affected

Library members often use the same login across multiple community and government portals. If any of these 4,826 accounts reused a password from LibraryLinkNJ on email, banking, or other online accounts, this breach can lead directly to credential stuffing, account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud.

How This Database Breach Happened

This incident is classified as a database and combolist breach, meaning attackers obtained a direct copy of LibraryLinkNJ's user table, likely by exploiting a vulnerability in the Drupal content management system the site ran on, and packaged the emails and hashes for distribution on a hacking forum. Drupal sites are a known target for this kind of attack when left unpatched.
