HEROIC Identifies the logs_cvv Stealer Log Uploaded to Telegram in August 2023

In August 2023, HEROIC's dark web monitoring systems detected a stealer log file circulating on Telegram under the name logs_cvv. The file contained 12,850 records sourced from compromised devices in the United States, capturing email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs that map directly to the accounts and services each victim was using at the time of infection.

Why This Data Is Dangerous

The logs_cvv file name suggests its contents were specifically curated to include payment-adjacent accounts and services. Stealer logs are particularly dangerous because they are extracted directly from infected devices, bypassing any hashing or encryption that might protect stored passwords. With 12,850 plaintext credential pairs available to any actor who downloads the file, the potential for immediate account takeover is high. Attackers do not need to crack anything because the passwords are already in readable form.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (specific services and accounts targeted by the stealer)

Why This Matters

When plaintext passwords from a stealer log are paired with the URLs of the exact services a victim uses, attackers have a precise roadmap for account takeover. Credential stuffing tools can test these combinations across banking platforms, shopping sites, and email providers in minutes. Victims who reuse passwords across multiple services face compounding risk: a single exposed credential can cascade into identity theft, unauthorized purchases, and account lockout across every platform where the same password was used. People affected by the logs_cvv breach may not even recieve notification, since stealer logs are rarely tied to a single breached organization.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Stealer malware infects devices through phishing emails, fake software updates, cracked application downloads, and malicious browser extensions. Once installed, the malware operates silently in the background, recording keystrokes, extracting saved browser credentials, and capturing autofill data. All of this information is bundled into a structured log file and exfiltrated to attacker-controlled infrastructure. The logs are then sorted by content type, with files like logs_cvv seperated out for their apparent payment and financial account data. These files are then shared on Telegram channels and dark web forums, sometimes freely and sometimes for sale.
