In December 2024, HEROIC's threat intelligence team discovered a stealer log file labeled "Italy Valid Hits" being distributed on Telegram. The file contains 107 stolen credential records, each one harvested from an infected device by infostealer malware. What makes this dataset particularly concerning is that every password is stored in plaintext, and the included URLs reveal exactly which Italian services were targeted.

Plaintext Passwords Leave No Room for Defense

When passwords are stored in plaintext, there is nothing standing between an attacker and your account. No hash to crack, no encryption to break — just a readable string that works the instant someone types it into a login page. For the 107 people affected by the Italy Valid Hits leak, their credentials are as exposed as if they had been written on a public billboard.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses — personal and potentially professional email accounts used as login credentials
  • Plaintext Passwords — completely unencrypted, ready for immediate misuse
  • URLs — the specific Italian websites and platforms where these credentials were stolen from

How One Stolen Password Leads to Many Compromised Accounts

Cybercriminals know that most people use the same password across multiple sites. After obtaining credentials from the Italy Valid Hits file, attackers deploy automated credential-stuffing scripts that test each email-password pair against dozens of popular platforms simultaneously. A password stolen from one Italian service can unlock email, banking, e-commerce, and social media accounts belonging to the same individual.

The Infostealer Malware Behind This Leak

Stealer logs originate from malware infections. Programs such as RedLine, Lumma, and Vidar embed themselves on a victim's computer, often through phishing emails or pirated software downloads. Once installed, the malware silently extracts every saved password, cookie, and autofill entry from the browser. It then packages this data into structured log files that are uploaded to command-and-control servers and eventually shared on Telegram channels like the one where Italy Valid Hits appeared.

Check If Your Credentials Were Exposed

If you use Italian web services or have accounts that may overlap with those targeted in this dump, take action now. HEROIC's data breach scanner lets you search across more than 400 billion compromised records to find out if your credentials have been leaked. A quick scan can reveal whether your password needs to be changed before an attacker uses it.
