Minecraft Players Beware: The MCWorlds Breach Dumped 419 Accounts with MD5 Passwords

HEROIC analysts identified the MCWorlds database while reviewing credential compilations that resurfaced on dark web forums in 2021. The breach occured in January 2021 and exposed 419 records from MCWorlds, a U.S.-based Minecraft server hosting platform. The leaked data included email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, and MD5 password hashes from registered users of the service.

MD5 Hashes and IP Addresses Make MCWorlds Records Ready for Immediate Exploitation

MD5-hashed passwords are among the most easily cracked credential types in existence. Attackers with rainbow tables can reverse typical MD5 hashes in seconds, turning the MCWorlds breach into a list of plaintext email and password pairs. The addition of IP addresses makes these records partcularly dangerous, enabling attackers to identify the physical region or internet provider of each affected user for targeted network attacks or more convincing phishing lures.
