The Me2DVD Breach Put 9,284 K-Drama Fans’ Passwords on the Dark Web
HEROIC analysts identified a database leak from Me2DVD, a now-defunct U.S. based site that sold and distributed K-drama and Asian TV series DVDs. The data surfaced on a hacking forum in August 2018, exposing 9,284 records made up of email addresses and plaintext passwords.
Why This Is Dangerous
Because Me2DVD stored passwords in plaintext, there was no hashing or encryption standing between the leaked file and the accounts inside it. Anyone who has this dataset can read every password directly and immediately try it against the email address it belongs to, with no cracking required.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
Why This Matters
Niche fan and entertainment sites like Me2DVD are exactly the kind of secondary account people forget about, which is also why they often reuse the same password there as they do on their email or banking accounts. That makes this leak a realistic source of credential stuffing, where attackers try the same email and password combination across other services, potentially leading to account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud years after the original site went offline.
How This Database Leak Happened
This incident is classified as a database and combolist leak, meaning attackers accessed Me2DVD's backend directly, likely through a website vulnerability, and pulled out the full set of user records. Because the site stored passwords in plaintext instead of hashing them, that single point of compromise gave attackers the exact login credentials for every one of the 9,284 accounts in the database, with no additional cracking step needed.
