HEROIC analysts spotted the noreast.com breach while scanning a cluster of 2017 community forum database dumps that had been quietly traded on underground channels. In March 2017, attackers accessed the noreast.com database and took records belonging to 60,979 registered users of this northeastern United States fishing community. The data that came out included usernames, email addresses, and passwords stored in plaintext, meaning no encryption or hashing was used at all. This is among the most serious storage failures a website can make, and it immediatly gave attackers fully usable credentials they could try on other sites without any cracking required.
