NSDA Data Breach Exposes 146K Student and Educator Debate Member Records

HEROIC's DarkHive system discovered the National Speech and Debate Association breach, exposing 146,464 records in August 2018. This US-based academic organization supporting high school and collegiate competitive speech and debate suffered a database compromise that revealed member email addresses and MD5 password hashes belonging to students, coaches, and educators across the United States.

Why This Is Dangerous

Academic organizations that serve minors and students hold data that carries heightened sensitivity, as school-affiliated email addresses identify victims as students whose accounts are often linked to educational institution systems. MD5 password hashing provides essentially no protection against modern cracking attacks, meaning the vast majority of these passwords are recoverable by criminal actors within hours. Student and educator credentials from academic organizations are targeted for attacks on school administrative systems, learning management platforms, and institutional email accounts.
