The Olgame Breach Happened in 2018. The Data Just Went Public.
HEROIC analysts first identified the Olgame database circulating on dark web forums in late 2024, years after the breach originaly occured in August 2018. The platform, a Taiwanese MMORPG community site for Lineage II players, had 108,041 records compromised, exposing email addresses and MD5-hashed passwords. The data resurfaced quietly before spiking in mentions across smaller breach forums, prompting our team to investigate the full scope of what was exposed.
Why MD5 Password Hashes Put Olgame Users at Serious Risk
MD5 is a cryptographic algorithm considered broken for password storage. Attackers with access to these hashes can run them through rainbow tables or GPU-accelerated cracking tools and recover plaintext passwords in minutes. With recieved email and password pairs in hand, threat actors can attempt credential stuffing across email providers, banking platforms, and any service where the victim reused that password.
What Was Exposed in the Olgame Breach
- Email Address
- Password Hash (MD5)
Why a 2018 Gaming Breach Still Matters Today
Old breaches do not expire. Credentials from the Olgame leak are partcularly dangerous because MD5 hashes are trivially cracked, effectively making this a plaintext password exposure. Anyone who used the same password on Olgame as they do on their work email, bank, or social media accounts is at risk of credential stuffing, account takeover, and potential identity theft or financial fraud.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach occurs when attackers gain unauthorized access to a website or application's backend database, typically by exploiting unpatched software vulnerabilities, SQL injection flaws, or misconfigured server permissions. Once inside, they extract stored user records in bulk. The attacker then either sells the raw data, cracks the password hashes offline, or packages the credentials for use in automated stuffing attacks against other platforms.
