The incident occured in August 2019 and exposed 8,779 records from the Singapore-based football odds platform, including email addresses, usernames, birthdays, password hashes stored as MD5, and plaintext passwords. The presence of plaintext credentials made this breach particularly dangerous for affected users.

Plaintext Passwords and MD5 Hashes Create Immediate Account Takeover Risk

When passwords are stored in plaintext, attackers need no cracking tools at all. They can log directly into OpeningOdds accounts and, more critically, attempt the same credentials on email providers, banking apps, and other betting platforms. MD5 hashes offer only slightly more protection, as they are easily reversed using precomputed rainbow tables. With birthdays also exposed, attackers can answer security questions and bypass two-factor authentication on seperate accounts.
