The breach, which occured in August 2018, exposed 37,180 records from the Pakistani news platform. Each record contained an email address and a password protected only by MD5 hashing, an algorithm so weak that most passwords can be reversed within minutes using widely available tools. The data's continued circulation years after the original incident signals ongoing risk for anyone who reused their credentials.
Why MD5-Hashed Passwords Are Nearly as Dangerous as Plaintext
MD5 was retired from serious security use years ago. Attackers can crack MD5 hashes using rainbow tables and GPU-accelerated tools in a fraction of the time required for modern algorithms.
