How the QuestApp Database Led to 522K Stolen Login Credentials
HEROIC found the QuestApp Database breach dated April 2024, exposing 522,813 records including email addresses, phone numbers, password hashes, first names, last names, and gender data from QuestApp, an Indian digital learning platform whose user database was extracted and distributed on criminal forums.
Why the QuestApp Breach Is Dangerous
Over 500,000 user accounts were exposed alongside MD5 and bcrypt password hashes. MD5-hashed passwords are particularly vulnerable to cracking with modern GPU-accelerated tools and rainbow tables. Criminals who crack these hashes gain direct access to QuestApp accounts and, critically, any other service where victims reused the same password.
What Was Exposed in the QuestApp Leak
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Password hashes (MD5, bcrypt)
- First names
- Last names
- Gender
Why This QuestApp Data Puts You at Risk
MD5 password hashes from this breach can be cracked quickly using rainbow table attacks or GPU-accelerated tools, giving attackers plaintext passwords. If you reused your QuestApp password elsewhere, those accounts are at risk. Your email address, phone number, and full name together also enable targeted phishing and identity theft attacks against Indian education platform users.
How Database Breaches Work
Database breaches occur when attackers gain unauthorized access to a company's data storage systems by exploiting software vulnerabilities, weak access controls, or misconfigured servers. Once inside, they extract user records in bulk and sell or publish the data on criminal forums. Education platforms handling student data are valuable targets because the records often contain contact details and reused passwords.
