HEROIC analysts identified a dataset in March 2021 connected to RapidBox, an Indian e-commerce and fashion retailer. The breach exposed 1,659 records containing email addresses, phone numbers, first names, and last names belonging to customers. No passwords were included, but the combination of contact details and full identity data is highly usable for targeted phishing and social engineering campaigns directed at Indian consumers.

How Phone Numbers and Full Names from RapidBox Enable Targeted Phishing

With a victim's full name, email address, and phone number, attackers can craft highly convincing impersonation messages. They may pose as delivery services, payment processors, or the retailer itself to trick users into revealing passwords, payment details, or one-time codes. This type of attack is partcularly effective when the attacker references the victim by name and knows their contact details, making the deception much harder to detect.

Why Contact Data from E-Commerce Breaches Fuels Identity Fraud

E-commerce customer records are particularly valuable because they confirm a person's purchasing behavior and contact information in one place. Attackers who obtained RapidBox records can use them to build detailed profiles of victims, enabling account takeover attempts on other platforms, targeted SMS fraud, and identity theft. The data occured in a context where it was circulated on dark web forums and Telegram channels focused on Indian market targets, amplifying the risk to affected users.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an unauthorized party gains access to a backend data store, typically through a web application vulnerability, misconfigured cloud storage, or compromised administrative credentials. Once inside, the attacker copies customer records and distributes them across dark web marketplaces or private trading channels. Even records without passwords are valuable for identity profiling and social engineering.
