HEROIC analysts uncovered the Regal Security breach while investigating a fresh batch of South African credential data observed circulating in restricted cybercriminal forums. The data was confirmed leaked on January 1, 2024, originating from a database compromise at Regal Security, a South African company providing security solutions to technicians, installers, and system integrators. The breach exposed personal and login data belonging to 17,302 users, including hashed passwords, raising immediate concern given the company's role in the security industry.

Why This Is Dangerous

There is a particular irony when a security company suffers a data breach. Regal Security's customers include professional technicians and system integrators, people with access to physical security infrastructure like alarm systems, CCTV networks, and access control installations. If any of those users reused their Regal Security password on other professional platforms, attackers could gain a foothold into sensitive business environments. Even the bcrypt password hashing used here does not eliminate the risk entirely, as weak passwords can still be cracked through targeted attacks.

  • Email Address

  • Last Name
  • Password Hash (bcrypt)

Why This Matters

When full names, email addresses, and password hashes are combined in a single leaked dataset, the result is a highly usable attack package. Criminals use the email and name to target you with personalised phishing messages. They use the password hash to attempt recovery of your actual password. If they succeed, credential stuffing attacks against your other accounts begin immediately. For professionals in the security and IT services sector, compromised credentials can lead to account takeover, stolen client data, and even physical security risks at client sites. This kind of breach can also damage reputational trust and lead to serious finantial consequences for affected businesses.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occured when an attacker exploits a weakness in a website or server to gain access to the underlying data storage system. This can happen through known software vulnerabilities that were never patched, through guessed or stolen administrator credentials, or through injection attacks that manipulate database queries. Once inside, the attacker exports the user table, capturing every stored record in a single operation. The resulting file is compact, easy to transfer, and immediately valuable on underground markets where criminals pay for fresh credential data.
