Security researchers at HEROIC spotted something new on Telegram in March 2024: a stealer log file named "ATM_LOGS," uploaded by an anonymous user and containing 6,553 records of stolen email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the login URLs tied to them. Despite the alarming name, the file is a standard batch of credentials harvested from malware-infected devices, not actual banking machine access.

Why This Is Dangerous

Because the passwords are stored as plaintext, there is no barrier between the file and an attacker's next move. Anyone who obtains this list can immediately attempt to log into the accounts it describes, without needing any special hacking skill.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs of the associated login pages

Why This Matters

Observers who track these Telegram channels note that files like "ATM_LOGS" often end up feeding automated credential stuffing campaigns within days of being posted. Because so many people reuse the same password across multiple sites, a single leaked login can quickly turn into account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud on unrelated platforms.

How Stealer Logs Work

Analysts who study these leaks explain that stealer malware typically arrives disguised as a game cheat, cracked software, or a fake browser update. Once installed, it scans the victim's device for saved credentials and autofil data, then quietly uploads everything to a remote server controlled by the attacker. The stolen batch is then labeled and shared, sometimes with dramatic names like "ATM_LOGS" meant to grab attention on underground forums.

Check If You Are Affected

Dont assume a dramatic file name means you are safe from the actual risk. Use HEROIC's free breach scanner to check your email against a databse of over 400 billion exposed records and see instantly whether you need to update a password.
