Researchers Link Ubisoft Forum Breach to 1.5M Stolen Logins
HEROIC analysts have recorded a database breach affecting the Ubisoft Forum, dated February 1, 2014, involving 1,540,732 exposed records. According to the incident record, the breach was originally disclosed via a RaidForums post, and while the leaked password hashes were reportedly corrupted during the breach, researchers found that some remained recoverable, leaving affected users exposed. The confirmed exposed data is limited to usernames and MD5 password hashes.
Why Corrupted Hashes Do Not Mean Safe Hashes
A common misconception is that damaged or partially corrupted password data is harmless. In this case, researchers determined that a meaningful subset of the MD5 hashes could still be recovered despite the corruption. MD5 is already a weak, fast algorithm to crack even under normal conditions, so any hash that survived the corruption intact is effectively as vulnerable as it would be in a clean breach.
What Was Exposed in the Ubisoft Forum Breach
- Usernames
- Password hashes (MD5)
Why This Matters
With 1,540,732 accounts affected, even a small recoverable fraction still represents a large number of usable, cracked credentials. Gamers often reuse the same username and password combination across platforms, storefronts, and even email accounts, which means a cracked Ubisoft forum password can become the key to a credential stuffing attack against far more valuable accounts, including payment-linked gaming storefronts.
How a Large-Scale Forum Database Breach Happens
This incident is classified as a database breach, meaning attackers gained direct access to the forum's backend systems rather than phishing users individually. Breaches at this scale typically stem from a vulnerability in the forum software or server infrastructure that allows an attacker to export the entire user table in one pass. The resulting data, even if damaged in transit or during extraction, often still holds enough structure for skilled attackers to partially reconstruct and exploit it, as researchers found here.
