HEROIC analysts flagged a resurfaced database dump tied to Sexaben.dk, a Danish adult website, that was originally compromised around April 12, 2016. The breach affected 6,129 user records and included password data stored in both MD5 phpBB3 format and plaintext. While the breach is smaller in scale than many others, our team found it being recieved and redistributed on dark web forums as part of credential compilation lists, making it a relevant and ongoing risk for anyone who had an account on the platform.

The Danger of Adult Site Credentials in the Wrong Hands

Breaches from adult platforms carry risks that go beyond the usual credential stuffing concerns. Attackers who obtain login data from a site like Sexaben.dk can use it for extortion, threatening to reveal a person's membership to employers, family members, or the public unless payment is made. Beyond that, the plaintext passwords in this dump can be tested directly against other accounts, since many people reuse passwords across sites they consider private or accessable only to themselves.

What Was Exposed in the Sexaben.dk Breach

  • Passwords (MD5 phpBB3 hashed)
  • Passwords (plaintext)

Why the Sexaben.dk Breach Remains Relevant Today

Older breaches from niche platforms are frequently overlooked, but they carry lasting risk. The MD5 phpBB3 hashed passwords in this dataset are considered weak by modern standards and can often be cracked using freely available tools. Once cracked, those passwords can be combined with personal details from other breaches to attempt account takeovers on email, banking, and social media platforms. Credential stuffing attacks using datasets like this one are fully automated and run continuously, putting even old accounts at risk.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach happens when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a website's backend storage, often by exploiting an unpatched vulnerability or weak server security. The attacker then exports the user database, which may contain usernames, passwords, and other account details, and shares or sells it on underground markets. Even years after the original incident, these dumps continue to circulate.
