In August 2024, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log tied to t-online.de webmail accounts, uploaded by a Telegram user, exposing 54 records made up of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs each login was used on.

Why One Leaked Login Can Unlock More Than Email

t-online.de is a long-running German webmail service, and email accounts like this one are frequently the recovery address tied to banking apps, shopping accounts, and social media logins. If an attacker gets into the email address exposed here, they can often trigger password reset emails for other services, effectively using this one small leak to chain their way into a much wider set of accounts.

What Was Exposed

  • t-online.de email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords, stored with no hashing or encryption
  • URLs identifying the exact site each stolen login belongs to

Why This Matters

Even though this is a small leak of 54 records, each one represents a complete, working credential pair tied to a real email account. The risk is not the size of the file, it is what a compromised email inbox can lead to: account takeover on banking or shopping sites, unauthorized password resets, and, if the same password is reused elsewhere, credential stuffing across other platforms entirely.

How This Small, Targeted Log Was Built

Stealer malware infects a device and silently records every username, password, and URL entered into a browser, then sends that data back to whoever controls the infection. To build a file focused specifically on t-online.de accounts, the operator likely filtered a larger batch of stolen logins down to just this email provider, making the data easier to sell to buyers interested in German targets before uploading it to Telegram.
