Inside the Traffing Hack: What 60,748 Victims Need to Know
HEROIC found the Traffing breach on December 24, 2022. The incident exposed 60,748 records containing email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs from a stealer log targeting United States accounts.
Why the Traffing Breach Is Dangerous
Stealer logs like Traffing capture credentials live from infected devices, delivering passwords that are authentic and in active use at the time of theft. Attackers pair each email address with its corresponding plaintext password and the URLs of the victim's accounts, then launch targeted login attempts across banking, email, and social media platforms immediatly after acquiring the data. The 60,748-record scale of this log provides attackers with a large, ready-to-use credential pool for sustained campaigns.
What Was Exposed in the Traffing Leak
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs (account login pages)
Why This Traffing Data Puts You at Risk
Because the passwords are already in plaintext, there is no cracking step before attackers can exploit them against accounts reused elswhere. Automated credential stuffing tools can process thousands of logins per minute, and fradulent transactions or account takeovers can occured before affected users are even notified. Gaining access to email accounts also lets attackers reset passwords on linked financial and retail sites, compounding the damage.
How Stealer Log Breaches Work
Stealer log breaches begin when infostealer malware reaches a victim's device through phishing emails, fake software installers, or drive-by downloads. Once active, the malware automaticaly harvests browser-saved credentials, session tokens, and the URLs of visited sites, then sends the data to attacker servers in encrypted transmissions. The packaged logs are distributed through Telegram channels and underground forums, where buyers use them to conduct account takeover campaigns for weeks or months after the original infection date.
