In August 2023, HEROIC analysts uncovered a stealer log collection called V-Z 266 PCS OCTOPUS being freely distributed by an anonymous Telegram user. The file contained 6,374 records taken from compromised devices, with each record including an email address, a plaintext password, and the URL of the site where those credentials were stolen. The data was accessible to every subscriber of the Telegram channel where it was posted.

Why This Is Dangerous

The V-Z OCTOPUS stealer log is not just a list of email addresses. It is a ready-to-use attack kit. Each record pairs a login credential with the specific website it came from, meaning an attacker can start attempting logins the moment they open the file. With plaintext passwords and no barriers, criminals can chain these stolen credentials to access email accounts, banking portals, and social media profiles in rapid succession.

What Was Exposed in the V-Z OCTOPUS Stealer Log

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords (fully readable, zero encryption)
  • URLs (the exact websites each credential belongs to)

Why This Matters

One leaked credential can open the door to a chain of compromised accounts. Here is how that unfolds:

  • Credential stuffing: Attackers run your stolen login against dozens or hundrads of other services using automated software, hoping you reuse the same password elsewhere.
  • Account takeover: Once inside your email, every account that uses that address for recovery becomes vulnerable to a password reset attack.
  • Identity theft: Access to accounts exposes personal informaton that can be used to open financial accounts or commit fraud in your name.
  • Financial fraud: Bank accounts, payment processors, and crypto wallets are prioritized once initial access is established.

How Stealer Logs Work

An infostealer is a category of malware designed specifically to harvest credentials from infected computers. It typically arrives through a phishing email, a fake software crack, or a malicious file disguised as something harmless. Once installed, it runs quietly in the background, pulling saved passwords from Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers, copying credentials stored in apps, and capturing session cookies that authenticate you on websites without needing a password. All of this is packaged into a log and sent to the attacker. From there, it can be sold on the dark web, auctioned off in private forums, or uploaded for free on Telegram where thousends of criminals can access it at once.
