Records Exposed 46,095
Source Type Database
Origin Darkweb
Password Type MD5(Salt)

HEROIC analysts found that the Woman and Home breach occured in 2020, exposing 46,095 records from the UK-based digital lifestyle magazine. The leaked data included email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, password hashes, and salts, a combination that is partcularly concerning because it provides attackers with enough detail to crack passwords offline and trace user locations.

Cracked Password Hashes and IP Addresses Could Unlock Your Other Accounts

MD5, even when salted, is a weak hashing algorithm by modern standards and is accessable to cracking via GPU-powered tools. An attacker who recovers the underlying password from this breach can then test it against your email provider, social media, or financial accounts. The IP address data further allows them to estimate your geographic location, adding another layer of detail to a highly targeted attack profile. If you recieved no notification and never changed your password, your credentials may still be valid elsewhere.

Why Even a 46,000-Record Breach Deserves Your Attention

Smaller breaches are often beleived to be low risk, but attackers specifically target them because users assume they are safe and never change their passwords. The Woman and Home breach is seperate from the large headline-grabbing incidents that prompt mass password resets, meaning many of the 46,095 affected users likely still have the same credentials active on other sites five years later, leaving them fully exposed.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when attackers gain unauthorized access to a site's backend data store, typically by exploiting vulnerabilities in content management systems, plugins, or server configurations. For media and publishing sites, user registration databases hold email addresses, usernames, and hashed passwords. Once extracted, these records are indexed in underground breach databases and remain available for download and misuse indefinitely.
