In August 2023, HEROIC analysts verified a stealer log file uploaded to Telegram by a user known as "172_Boss2" that contained 7,727 records. Each record includes an email address, a plaintext password, and a URL, all harvested silently from infected computers by infostealer malware. With nearly 8,000 complete credential sets in a single file, this log represents one of the larger Telegram-distributed stealer dumps from that period and gives attackers a ready-made list of accounts to target.

Why This Is Dangerous

The passwords in this file are stored in plaintext, not encrypted or hashed, which means they can be used instantly without any additional processing. Combined with the email addresses and the specific URLs where the credentials were captured, attackers have everything they need to begin logging into victims' accounts immediately. Banking sites, email providers, workplace portals, and subscription services are all potential targets if any of the captured URLs point to those services.

The scale of this leak, 7,727 records, means automated credential stuffing tools can work through thousands of account attempts within hours, quietly testing stolen credentials against dozens of platforms before most victims have any idea their passwords were compromised.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (web addresses captured at the moment of credential theft)

Why This Matters

Credential stuffing attacks powered by stealer logs like this one are a leading cause of account takeovers. When attackers test 7,727 stolen email and password pairs across banking apps, email platforms, and e-commerce sites, even a small success rate translates to hundreds of compromised accounts. Victims often do not find out until they notice unauthorized transactions, locked accounts, or emails they never sent appearing in their sent folders.

Identity theft is a frequent consequence. An attacker with access to someone's email account can harvest enough personal information to open credit lines, file false tax returns, or impersonate the victim to employers and financial institutions.

How Stealer Logs Work

Infostealer malware is software specifically designed to collect credentials without triggering antivirus alerts or notifying the user. It is commonly spread through pirated software downloads, malicious browser extensions, phishing attachments, and drive-by downloads from compromised websites. Once running, it extracts saved passwords from browsers, captures keystrokes on login pages, and records the URLs associated with each credential. Everything is packaged into a log file and uploaded to the attacker's server.

The threat actor "172_Boss2" then shared this log on Telegram, where criminal marketplaces operate freely. These channels can have thousands of subscribers, meaning a single upload can put stolen credentials in the hands of a large number of bad actors almost instantly.
