Source Type Stealer log
Origin Telegram
Password Type plaintext

HEROIC analysts discovered a stealer log file uploaded to a public Telegram channel on November 5, 2023. The file contained 27,329 records pulled directly from infected devices, exposing email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of websites those devices had accessed. This type of breach does not require a company to be hacked -- the data is stolen silently from individual computers using malware, then shared publicly where anyone can download and use it.

Why This Is Dangerous

Plaintext passwords are the most damaging data type an attacker can recieve. Unlike hashed passwords, these require no cracking. Anyone who downloads this file can immediately try your email and password combination on Gmail, your bank, Amazon, PayPal, and hundreds of other services. Because most people reuse passwords, a single stolen credential can unlock seperate accounts across many platforms. This log was shared openly on Telegram, meaning it was accessable to thousands of bad actors within hours of being posted.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (websites and services accessed from infected devices)

Why This Matters

When email addresses and plaintext passwords appear together in a public leak, the risk of credential stuffing attacks rises sharply. Attackers use automated tools to test these combinations across thousands of websites in minutes. Victims often do not know their accounts have been taken over until they are locked out, recieve a suspicious login alert, or discover fraudulent charges. Identity theft and financial fraud are common outcomes from stealer log data, especially when the exposed URLs reveal which banking or financial services the victim used.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Stealer logs are created by malware that silently runs on a victim's computer. The malware -- often installed through a fake software download, a phishing email attachment, or a malicious ad -- records everything saved in the browser: passwords, cookies, autofill data, and the sites visited. This information is then transmitted to the attacker and compiled into a log file. These logs are commonly sold on dark web markets or, as occured in this case, uploaded freely to Telegram channels to build reputation or cause disruption. The individual whose machine is infected may have no idea anything was stolen.
